Menstruation Blockade:It exists everywhere........
I was aware that at some parts of my country girls and women have to sleep outside home during Menstruation. This practice is named as Chaupaddi. Basically, In Chauppadi, girls & women during menstruation have to stay outside home in cowshed and are not allowed to enter kitchen and take part in religious activities. I had read about Chauppadi in some newspaper and I felt bad about it for sometimes after reading the news but I eventually forget about it and I was back to my normal life as in my Home I am allowed to enjoy all the luxuries like sleeping in cozy bed with blankets on even when i am in my period. I am allowed to enter kitchen. Of course one has to maintain cleanliness and hygiene during period.
The real tragedy was to witness the Chaupaddi and even forced to follow the practice by my landlord while I was transferred to Darma VDC of Humla as a part of my job. When my landlord put forward the idea that I should also follow the chauppadi if I live there, I was very shocked and couldn't speak for myself. I talked about that to my seniors and I immediately move out from my previous landlord and rent a room at another place where my seniors convinced new landlord that I wont be living in cowshed during my period. I still hate myself for being weak and not speaking against what i don't believe in & what is wrong.
It is very heartbreaking to see girls and women to sleep in cowshed even in freezing cold over straw in ground. No doubt this will surely induce negative impact upon their health. The other bitter truth was that these girls and women wouldn't dare to go against Chauupadi. I have met women in Darma who would speak for their right but they don't say a word against Chaupaddi and just follow it.
I even talked to some women that Chaupadi is not fair on part of women as menstruation is a natural physical process going inside female body. But they would tell me that their 'GOD" will be angry and curse them if they don't adhere to this practice.
Not just in Humla, I have seen girls on period being considered as impure even in cities among so called educated people who probably must have forgotten what they read in school in Health Education. So, From society deprived of education to so-called educated society, girls during period are forced to experience disrespectful events like chaupaadi, considering girls impure etc.
Well, my point is, its a high time that we accept the science behind the menstruation and respect the very fact and let girls & women live a normal life even on her period.

Well, Neelam this is the situation of our country, very sad. But don't worry this will end up soon when girls like you raise these type of awareness. :) :) :)
ReplyDeletehmmm....yeah I too hope that these things will change in near future......
DeleteNice read, Neelam.
ReplyDeleteIt's just a shame how our traditional beliefs is linked with pleasuring god and most of them are purely sin. Offering lives of animals, chaupadi (as u mentioned), compulsion to have son... many others.
Change is necessary and it definitely will. It takes time but it can be speeded up when generation of ours and the coming will tackle it.
Good Work. Respect. :)
Thank You Avishek......
Deleteproud of you!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Rajan.......
DeleteExcellent analysis!it's almost ended in the most part of Nepal, but still remains in some conservative society run by stubborn people. I'm sure the word chaupaddi will removed very soon from nepalese society and remains only in history.
ReplyDeleteYes Sir.....I too hope soo that the such ill practice like chauppadi will be obsolete in very near future....
